How It Works
Semaglutide is a peptide that mimics a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) that targets areas of the brain that regulate appetite and food intake.
Semaglutide helps to control your blood sugar, but people also tend to lose weight. GLP-1, the key hormone involved, slows down how fast your stomach empties food. And in addition to causing your pancreas to release insulin, Semaglutide also blocks a hormone that causes your liver to release sugar (glucagon). Together, these functions can help you feel less hungry, causing you to eat less food and lose more weight. Keep in mind that weight loss can take time, and you’ll see the best results when you are using your medication in combination with a healthy diet and exercise. Sometimes the medication may not work for you, or you may not be able to tolerate the full dose due to side effects.
Studies show you can lose an average of 15 – 20% of your weight. Example: 200 lb person can lose 30 to 40 lbs on a Semaglutide weight loss program that includes a healthy diet and exercise.
When beginning Semaglutide therapy, the patient begins with a low dose 1 mg per mL strength, then gradually increases dosing and strength as the therapy progresses. IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO FOLLOW PRESCRIBED DOSING TO AVOID UNWANTED SIDE EFFECTS. Some common side effects include, but are not limited to: nausea, burping, heartburn, feeling of fullness, not feeling hungry.
Important
Dosing must be followed exactly as prescribed. Use an injection on the same day each week.
Precautions
Call your doctor at once if you have signs of a thyroid tumor, such as swelling or a lump in your neck, trouble swallowing, a hoarse voice, or shortness of breath.
Anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer should avoid the semaglutide. People who have a rare condition called multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2) shouldn’t take it either; neither should those with a history of pancreatitis or gallbladder disease. Any older adult who has thinning bones (osteopenia or osteoporosis), or severe loss of muscle mass, should be cautious because this can exacerbate those problems especially if they fail to build adequate aerobic and strength training exercise into their weight loss program.
